Don't Get Burned
Most burns are preventable. Here are some tips to help you prevent burns around the home.
- Watch overhead power lines when working on the roof of the house. Never let an aluminum ladder touch the power lines.
- Replace worn electrical cords to avoid electrical burns.
- Place caps over unused electrical outlets to prevent injury to small children. Hardware stores sell these special outlet covers.
- Wear tight-fitting or short sleeves when you cook, and avoid reaching across the stovetop while burners are lit.
- Keep pan handles turned inward on the stove so children can't grasp them.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
- Practice exit drills in the home.
- Never smoke in bed or while working on cars.
- Don't hold a child on your lap while drinking hot beverages. Scalding is the number one cause of burns in young children.
- Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120 degrees or less to prevent scalds. Water at 140 degrees can cause a serious burn in just 4 seconds.
- Store matches and lighters out of children's reach.
- Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home. Check them monthly–perhaps when your electric bill comes, as a reminder.
