Boys in baseball caps Bridgeport Hospital's pediatric department continues to grow, as it becomes a referral center for increasing numbers of pediatric patients (over 1600 per year). Bridgeport Hospital's pediatric services are among the most comprehensive in Connecticut and include a graduate medical education program affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. The Center has the only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in Fairfield County, which draws on a staff of pediatric internists and experts in pediatric asthma, trauma, heart disease, and kidney disease.

The PT Barnum Pediatrics Center, made possible through philanthropic support from the community, provides an inviting space with circus theme decorations and a family-friendly atmosphere, all of which lessen the fear and isolation that young patients feel when hospitalized.

The Pediatric Unit is staffed by nurses, social workers, therapists and child-life personnel specifically trained in pediatric care. There are special programs in childhood asthma, burn care, pediatric HIV infection, and the developmental assessment of high-risk newborns and foster children.
