Arrhythmia
An abnormal heart rhythm such as bradycardia or tachycardia.
Symptoms:
- very fast, slow, or irregular heart beat
- fluttering in the chest
- heart skipping a beat
- occasional heavy, pounding beats
- dizziness, faintness, breathlessness
For the majority of people, these symptoms are completely harmless. But for some, arrhythmias may be a dangerous sign. Arrhythmias may require medical treatment to keep the heartbeat regular, especially in the following circumstances:
- underlying heart disease (past heart attack, high blood pressure, weakened heart muscle)
- a person experiencing fainting, near fainting, or periods of rapid heartbeat not related to exercise
- a family history of fainting, abnormal rhythms, or unexplained death under age 60
If you are concerned about an arrhythmia, consult your physician.
