Calcium Channel Blockers

Calcium helps the heart and blood vessels to work effectively. Oddly enough, the goal of Calcium Channel Blockers (CCBs) is to partially prevent calcium from doing this job. Preventing the heart and blood vessels from doing their most energetic work relaxes the muscle in the walls of arteries, allowing the arteries to open wider. This, in turn, lowers the blood pressure and improves the blood supply to the heart. Calcium channel blockers also relax the heart muscle. All of these effects allow the heart to get along with a reduced blood supply.
