6 Ways to Reduce High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure is the force moving blood exerts against the walls of your arteries. For adults, normal blood pressure is well below 140/90. (The higher number is the pressure when your heart contracts; the lower number is the pressure when it relaxes.) To lower your blood pressure:

1.Lose weight if you are overweight. A weight loss of just 10% can make a big difference.
2.Reduce your sodium intake to no more than 2400 mg of sodium or 1 1/4 teaspoons of salt per day.
3.Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables (5–9 servings per day) and low-fat dairy products. This will help you to consume a diet rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and protein; and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. Such a diet can help to lower your blood pressure. /td>
4.Get in shape. Try to get in at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity or exercise every day.
5.Limit alcohol intake to no more than one to two drinks a day.
6.Have your blood pressure taken frequently and know your levels.
