6 Ways to Reduce High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Blood pressure is the force moving blood exerts against the walls of your arteries. For adults, normal blood pressure is well below 140/90. (The higher number is the pressure when your heart contracts; the lower number is the pressure when it relaxes.) To lower your blood pressure:
| 1. | Lose weight if you are overweight. A weight loss of just 10% can make a big difference. |
| 2. | Reduce your sodium intake to no more than 2400 mg of sodium or 1 1/4 teaspoons of salt per day. |
| 3. | Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables (5–9 servings per day) and low-fat dairy products. This will help you to consume a diet rich in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and protein; and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol. Such a diet can help to lower your blood pressure. /td> |
| 4. | Get in shape. Try to get in at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity or exercise every day. |
| 5. | Limit alcohol intake to no more than one to two drinks a day. |
| 6. | Have your blood pressure taken frequently and know your levels. |
