Breast Health for Teens

Fairfield, CT—On March 23, over 120 students from Fairfield’s Ludlowe High School participated in the Norma Pfriem Breast Care Center’s health information program for teens, Este Listo/Be Prepared! A partnership with local schools, Esté Listo/Be Prepared! teaches young women about breast health, providing them with good health maintenance habits that prepare them for adulthood.

Sally Cascella, the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center’s Senior Nurse-Educator, and Nancy Church, the Center’s Outreach Coordinator, teach students about breast health at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.

Sally Cascella, the Breast Care Center’s Senior Nurse-Educator, and Nancy Church, the Center’s Outreach Coordinator, worked with students in fourteen health classes.

“Connecticut has the SECOND highest rate of breast cancer in the nation,” says Church. “While this statistic is shocking, we know that education and early detection saves lives. As part of Esté Listo/ Be Prepared! students learn about changes in their bodies that may indicate a problem and how nutrition and other lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise and smoking can impact one’s breast health. The program has already educated hundreds of girls and women in Fairfield County.”

Girls are also the pipeline to their parents and can help outreach workers connect with hard to reach, high risk adult women. As part of the program students are asked to become healthcare ambassadors, bringing home information to members of their immediate and extended families. Referral forms are also sent home to help women access counseling services at the Breast Care Center and free and affordable screening services. “This is another way we’re trying to reach women of all ages,” Cascella says.

The Breast Care Center works in the schools educating teens and adults about breast health. Schools interested in scheduling a program with the Breast Care Center can call Nancy Church at 203-255-5300.
