Diabetes is a disease of the body's metabolism. It comes in three types:

• Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin

• Type 2 diabetes, in which the body cannot use the insulin effectively; this is also called a resistance to insulin

• Gestational diabetes, which occurs only during pregnancy
